Gray architectural shingle roof with intersecting rooflines and a stone chimney

A shingle color is part of your whole exterior.

Architectural asphalt shingles add layered texture and blended color to your roof. We help St. Augustine homeowners consider the brick, siding, trim, and roofline together before settling on a look.

Start with the profile

Compare the depth and shadow lines of the architectural shingles available from GAF and Atlas. A more pronounced profile can change how the roof reads from the street.

Then look at the blend

View a physical sample beside your exterior in daylight. A small screen image can hide undertones that become noticeable across a full roof.

Cool gray

A direction to explore with white trim, cool siding, and stone.

Warm earth tones

Consider the relationship with warm brick, cream, and natural wood.

Deep charcoal

A stronger contrast that puts more emphasis on the roofline.
Color families above are inspiration, not manufacturer swatches. Final selection depends on the chosen shingle line, available colors, and any applicable HOA requirements.

Two shingle manufacturers. Clear warranty conversations.

Roofology is a GAF Certified Plus and Atlas Pro Platinum installer. That gives our shingle discussion a specific starting point: which manufacturer, which shingles, which accessories, and which written protection?

GAF Certified Plus

Ask us about GAF architectural shingles and the System Plus or Silver Pledge limited warranty options available on qualifying roof systems. We’ll explain the required components and the coverage included in your proposal.

Atlas Pro Platinum

Where asphalt shingles make sense

Best for

Homeowners who want dimensional texture, a familiar residential appearance, and a broad choice of color blends. Architectural shingles often offer a lower starting investment than metal or tile, making them worth considering when replacement is needed and budget matters.

Not ideal for

A homeowner set on the long, uninterrupted lines of standing-seam metal or the sculpted profile of tile. Asphalt shingles also are not the right covering for a flat roof; low-slope sections need their own assessment and suitable roofing system.
Price is only part of the material decision. Compare the appearance, care, roof design, and written warranties of metal roofing and tile roofing if either better fits your priorities.

The shingles you see depend on the layers you don’t.

1. Inspect the existing shingles

We start with the condition of the asphalt roof: damaged tabs, brittleness, curling, and areas of concern. Isolated damage may suit a limited repair; widespread deterioration calls for a replacement discussion.

2. Specify the shingle system

Your proposal should identify the shingle line and color, starter and ridge products, underlayment, ventilation work, and how decking repairs will be priced. We’ll talk through those choices before installation.

3. Address the deck and water details

Discuss tear-off rather than simply covering old shingles. Removing the existing layers allows the deck to be assessed, with underlayment and flashing details planned before the new shingle courses go on.

4. Finish the roof and review its care

Ridge caps, ventilation, and transitions deserve the same attention as the field shingles. At completion, review the shingle warranty documents and care guidance for the system installed on your home.

Florida humidity belongs in the shingle conversation.

Algae resistance concerns the roof’s appearance; attic ventilation concerns the conditions beneath it. Ask about both. Selected GAF and Atlas shingles address algae-related streaking, while a suitable intake and exhaust arrangement helps manage attic heat and moisture.

Before you choose your shingles

Architectural shingles use a layered construction that creates more depth than the flatter, uniform pattern of three-tab shingles. For your replacement, we’ll compare available GAF and Atlas architectural profiles, color blends, and product-specific features rather than treating all asphalt shingles as the same.

Algae-resistant shingles address specific algae-related discoloration, not every cause of roof staining. Trees, debris, and other growth can affect appearance. GAF and Atlas offer algae-protection features on selected products; the qualifying shingles, accessories, and written warranty determine the coverage.

A tear-off exposes the roof deck so its condition can be assessed before new shingles are installed. An overlay leaves the existing layers in place and can conceal problems beneath them. We’ll discuss the tear-off scope and any decking allowances for your home before you approve the shingle replacement.

A ridge vent needs an appropriate intake-air path to work as part of a balanced attic ventilation system. Blocked soffits or inadequate intake can limit its effectiveness. Your shingle estimate should address the existing intake and exhaust arrangement, not simply add a vent at the ridge.

Ask for the exact warranty name, qualifying shingle-system components, registration requirements, and who covers workmanship. Roofology is GAF Certified Plus and Atlas Pro Platinum. Coverage depends on the manufacturer and package selected; a lifetime shingle label does not mean every roof problem is covered for life.

Localized shingle damage may be repairable when the surrounding shingles remain serviceable and can be worked on without causing further damage. Brittle, curling, or widely deteriorated shingles can change that decision. Roofology offers limited shingle repairs when appropriate and will explain when a replacement makes more sense.
